The 5 Superheroes ‘Haywire’ Star Gina Carano Could Play

Daisy Johnson

Stephen Soderbergh’s tale of a framed black ops agent seeking answers and revenge isn’t set to premiere until January 2012 but its star, Gina Carano, is already turning heads. It’s a sad rarity that the actresses cast in action roles really look like they can beat up the large stuntmen they share scenes with so imagine my delight when seeing how awesome Carano looks kicking dudes in the head or punching their ever-living lights out. Naturally, I want to see her play a superhero. But which one?

Here is my list of four-color butt-kickers I’d most like to see Carano and her MMA skills bring to life.

5) Agent Daisy Johnson aka Quake (Marvel)
Gifted with the ability to produce and manipulate seismic waves, Johnson is also a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with the very rare distinction of being one of Nick Fury’s proteges. She’s an excellent hand-to-hand combatant, an expert marksman, and has pinpoint accuracy over her seismic waves (she once made Wolverine’s heart explode). If they ever give Fury his own film, I think Johnson would make an excellent second in command and Carano might just be the perfect person to bring her to life.

Domino

4) Domino (Marvel)
The pale-skinned, black-eyed, probability-bending mercenary mutant has been a prominent member of the X-franchise off and on for about 20 years now. I’m not sure what direction the movies are going, but she’d make a great addition to the Wolverine flicks as a lesser antagonist hired by the big bad who later becomes an ally. The fight scenes between Carano and Hugh Jackman could be epic.

3) Agent Helix (IDW)
Helix made her debut in the ‘G.I. Joe’ franchise as an unlockable character in the video game adaptation of the questionable ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” movie and a stand-alone comic as part of the legitimate Joe-verse simultaneously. She is a covert operative (so covert, most Joes don’t even know she exists), expert marksman, Olympic-level gymnast, a near master in several martial arts disciplines, and “has the ability to identify and solve complex physical calculations at a rate that some consider extremely spooky.” She’s also been on an important mission with Snake Eyes so that makes her a pretty good choice to show up in the third Joe flick (which I assume they’re going to make).

2) Black Canary (DC Comics)
Dinah Laurel Lance is a metahuman with the power of the “Canary Cry,” a sonic ability that can do anything from rendering you unconscious to destroying buildings to making your head explode. She is also beautiful, charismatic, a master strategist, possessor of detective skills considered to be on par with Batman, and widely regarded as one of the greatest hand-to-hand fighters in the DC Universe. That means she can kick your butt without even resorting to her superpower, which also means whoever plays her needs to bring the pain. After watching this trailer, don’t tell me you don’t think Carano can pull that off.

Black Canary and Huntress

1) Huntress
The daughter of a big time mob boss, as a child she witnessed her entire family murdered thanks to a hit order while hiding in a closet. She vowed vengeance and became one of Gotham’s vigilantes, one that Batman considers too violent and unpredictable to officially endorse her caped crusader-ing but he’s never turned down her help. Like Black Canary, I feel like her fighting style would be grounded, powerful, and a little bit wild. I also think she should thoroughly enjoy kicking butt. I think Gina could nail that vibe.

Honorable Mention: Manhunter – Kate Spencer is a federal prosecutor who dons a mish-mash of equipment to see that justice is served to super-powered criminals who escape punishment. She’s got an ex-husband, a six-year old son, and, despite being a lawyer, isn’t above blackmailing someone in protective custody to make sure her gadgets are in proper working order. Spencer is a great character – she’s smart, tough, has complicated relationships, and is one of the few gray-area female heroes running around the DC universe (and the only one that isn’t originally a resident of Gotham City or Bat-related). She’s also a hell of a fighter, possessing a ferocity that few lady heroes get to exhibit.

Yay or nay to my picks? Have any other suggestions? Don’t care and just like watching the trailer over and over?

About Tamara Brooks

A few things I wondered about as a kid: Why didn't Wonder Woman punch more bad guys in the face on the tv show?; How does Superman flying around the Earth turn back time?; Could someone really catch bullets with their teeth?; Why didn't the liquid bits of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man cause 3rd degree burns on whoever it landed on? Because melted marshmallow is up there with molten hot lava.
