Misfits Guide to Summer Movies 2010

We’ve already seen The Losers, Iron Man 2, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Splice come out of the gates with mixed results. But there are more huge films yet to come so let’s explore in this slightly belated guide…

June 11
The A-Team
I was most suspicious of this film but Quinton “Rampage” Jackson looks very promising as B.A. Baracus. Also,
that tank bit in the trailer totally sold me. I was hoping it’d keep the billions-of-bullets-fired-yet-no-one-gets-dead fun of the original but so long as there’s car flipping, machine building, and explosions, I think I’ll be content.

The Karate Kid
Many people do not improve of this remake. I say at least this kid shows legit martial arts skills in the flick. The world hasn’t been treated to splits like that since TimeCop.

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Undead (limited)

June 18
Jonah Hex
It’s seems a foregone conclusion that this movie is going to be bad (the ginormous horse-mounted machine guns being key evidence against the defense). The question is if it’s going to be so bad it’s good or just plain bad. Regardless of the actual film, I think Josh Brolin will do an excellent job in the title role and I have a feeling Megan Fox will have more to do in this flick than both Transformers combined.

Toy Story 3
How can you say no to Pixar? I can haz Incredibles seekwill nao?

Knight and Day
I’m almost surprised this looks fun. Cameron Diaz does action and comedy very well so I expect her to shine.
Tom Cruise playing a spy guy people keep saying is crazy is…well…an extremely shrewd decision. Also…Marc
Blucas. Heart.

June 30
Twilight: Eclipse
No matter your personal feelings about the “franchise,” the concept of mythical creatures in an all out fight is
awesome. I shall speculate no further on the film.

July 2
The Last Airbender
Every time I see those kids standing in a village full of Inuits/Natives it makes me kinda mad. Visually? Spot on. Casting? So off…so very, very off…

July 9
Despicable Me

Predators
Yes. Yes yes yes.

July 16
Inception
Did I mention yes? Because also yes.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Tasty cheese…

July 23
Salt
Angelina Jolie is a very good action hero so I’m looking forward to this. I can’t say whether or not it’ll be any good but I always appreciate a chick kicking butt and shooting guns.

Valhalla Rising [Limited]
Beware – This may not be as action pcked as it seems…

July 25
O Apostolo 3-D
I honestly have no idea what this movie is about but it looks fascinating…

July 30
The Adjustment Bureau
Ticket? Bought.

Beastly
It’s actually a great idea, looks like it’s well-written and it’s got Neil Patrick Harris which is awesome. The problem? I’m not feeling much from Vaness Hudgins. Poor thing. But I’ll probably end up seeing it with my neice so I better suck it up. At least I’ll have Alex Pettyfer to look forward. He’s underrated but poised to break out very soon.

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore
I just really like the title. Oh…and your kids will most likely drag you out to this.

August 6
The Other Guys
Will Farrell and Mark Wahlberg in buddy cop flick as the B (or possible D) team who sit behind the desks to Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson’s uber-team. It’s awesome looking.

August 13
The Expendables
If there weren’t so many other awesome movies coming out, this would be the one I’m most looking forward to. It’s totally up there though. I’m already mentally planning the sequel.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Yes. Yet again.

August 20
Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang
The magical McPhee is back, this time to unite two sets of children and save mama Maggie Gyllenhaal’s farm. I enjoyed the first film because I liking seeing bratty children get served.

August 27
Centurion [Limited]
Anything where someone yells “It’s a trap!” has to be good…

Piranha 3D
It’s exactly what you think it is by the title.

Bonus Flicks: September
1st – The American
Mmm…assassin intrigue…

3rd – Machete
Robert Rodriguez makes good on the fake trailer attached to Grindhouse a few years ago. And it seems to be living up to it’s gory, 70’s exploitation roots based on all the clips.

10th – Resident Evil: Afterlife
Filmed with James Cameron’s 3D technology, this may be the first time you’ve thought zombie decapitation looked so pretty…

About Tamara Brooks

A few things I wondered about as a kid: Why didn't Wonder Woman punch more bad guys in the face on the tv show?; How does Superman flying around the Earth turn back time?; Could someone really catch bullets with their teeth?; Why didn't the liquid bits of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man cause 3rd degree burns on whoever it landed on? Because melted marshmallow is up there with molten hot lava.
